Feather 4 point stars p2p (3) $12.00 USD
A very classical design which easily clicks into place. The p2p format means that it can tolerate some compression or expansion - so the pattern of the star does not have to be exactly as these ones are drafted.
Other names for this type of star - or combinations thereof are Rocky Road to Kansas, Crossed Canoes, Crossed Kayaks, Indian Canoes, Tippecanoe, The Dragon Fly, Twinkling Star, Worlds Without End, and Golden Wedding.
I tried drafting one pattern, thinking that I could just adjust the height and it would fit any of the 3 most common formats of this star - but no, it did not work!
So it is 3 for the price of 1, and anything just a little different to any of those 3 will easily be managed.

The numbers at the end of the pattern name denote the approximate angle between the outer lines on the arm of the star point - so larger the number the wider the star arm.
How the blocks are drafted: this will help you know which pattern to use
Each is drafted in a square which is one quarter the size of the finished size of the star block.

Widest armed block
1. find the midpoint of two adjacent sides
2. find the corner where the two side which have no markings on them meet
3. draw two lines from that corner - one to each of the marked midpoints.

Middle armed block
method 1. using a protractor, draw two lines radiating from one corner - each 30 degrees away from the outer edge. Draw these lines right out to the edge of the square
method 2. no protractor required - fold the square into 3 equal slices radiating from one corner drawing lines along the fold lines.

Narrow armed block
1. Similar to the widest armed block but this time find the point one third of the way out from the corners of two adjacent sides
2. find the corner where the two side which have no markings on them meet
3. draw two lines from that corner - one to each of the marked points.

On any of these templates, draw a line across the bottom of the star arms if this is the version of the pattern you want.
These are the templates without any seam lines
What I then do is cut along these lines, glue the required pieces onto heavy card and then cut the card leaving .25" seam line all around.

To nicely removed the tips cut across the top of the pointed arm .25" away from the original template paper. Then place this on top of a side triangle as if you were sewing them together. Trim away the excess tip from the side triangle. Repeat this same trick for the bottom triangle if you are using that variation.
I will put all this into the Patchwork area - along with step-by-step photos at a later date.
Design Features
- the tip of this pattern is not pointed - which makes for a much more relaxed fit, both for when the fabric does not sit well on the machine and for those less-than-perfect piecers!
Tips & Info
- flattened p2p triangles work extremely well around the outside of this star - probably triangles which are not too plain
