While it is drawn for a 45 degree diamond, adjusting the height it also fits into a 60 degree one - or for that matter any diamond.
So it is most versatile and can be used in 6 pointed, 8 pointed, etc stars as well as the 8 pointed one it was designed for! The only 'must have' is that the widest point of the diamond has to be halfway between the tips.
