Marlene's Quilt(s)
two similar quilts - Marlene pieced one, her friend the otherMarlene's Quilting, Wonthaggi, Australia
based on a photo of 'Road 66' - a quilt made by Di Ford - pattern available in her book 'Primarily Patchwork'.
Marlene belongs to a quilting group of 8 - all of whom are making handpieced hexagon quilts - some using English Paper Piecing, but most using templates.
The first quilt shown is hers, and the other is her friend Wilma's - but Marlene did the quilting on both.
Marlene's quilt was the first hexagon quilt that she has attempted (either to make or quilt). It was made using a 1.25 inch (each side) hexagon template set, which included the hexagon, diamond and triangle templates needed. The quilt measures 75 by 68 inches and uses a variety of reproduction fabrics - with the border fabric from the Civil War Album 2 collection.
Wilma's started with a fat eighth pack of 'Metropolitan Fair' fabrics, and added a wide border from the same fabric range. It was a slightly wider border than Marlene's - which meant her quilt has a finished size of 81 by 75 inches.
I just love the fabrics and the format used in these quilts. Both Marlene and Wilma have done such wonderful jobs - expert fabric choices, precise cutting, wonderful handstitching, and careful quilting. What heirlooms!
