Karamu's Joss Sample Quilt
Ross and Maria Munro, Karamu Quilting, Hastings, New ZealandRoss and Maria are the distributors in New Zealand for Gammill and Statler Stitchers.
They take one of their machines to shows around the country to demonstrate what it can do. During these shows they stitch out (across the width of the machine bed) the outline (digitised by Ross) for a band sampler. It has lots of different areas in it which can be filled with all manner of patterns - borders, squares, triangles, rectangles, Flying Geese ...
This outline gives them lots of room to play - and also allows show visitors to play. At the end of the show (or during) these samples are cut off and put up for sale.
Much to my delight, at the New Zealand Quilt Symposium (which in 2013 was held in Taupo) Ross and Maria decided to play with my patterns in their samplers.
This sample has lots more Flying Geese in it, and on the most left hand end square, shows how a simple triangle can be used so effectively in building to quite a major design - just by repeating it.
I was pleased with how the Feather square could be pushed around into a rectangle - but still turn out well.
Joss border comes in an a or a b version. This b version goes out to a point between leaves - the a version is a lot more rounded. It is a great pattern for fitting into squares along a border.
