Karamu's Cable Corner Sample
Ross and Maria Munro, Karamu Quilting, Hastings, New ZealandRoss and Maria are the distributors in New Zealand for Gammill and Statler Stitchers.
They take one of their machines to shows around the country to demonstrate what it can do. During these shows they stitch out (across the width of the machine bed) the outline (digitised by Ross) for a band sampler. It has lots of different areas in it which can be filled with all manner of patterns - borders, squares, triangles, rectangles, Flying Geese ...
This outline gives them lots of room to play - and also allows show visitors to play. At the end of the show (or during) these samples are cut off and put up for sale.
Much to my delight, at the New Zealand Quilt Symposium (which in 2013 was held in Taupo) Ross and Maria decided to play with my patterns in their samplers.
Ross loves using cables - and he certainly put them to use in this quilt - but in unusual ways:
- the corners have different multiples of the same pattern (I did not notice this until I went to find the pattern he used)
- putting the little sashes to fill the border, rather than doing a continuous pattern was a great idea
- then the 2 rowsof cables within the quilt certainly are squished - but again, still looking great.

The cable sashes used down the sides were drawn (in my mind, anyway) so that they would have self turning corners when meeting in sashes.

- Left hand corner (main picture): Cable 3 cnr 3
- Right hand corner (main picture): Cable 3 cnr 2
- Filling the remaining border areas (x6 multiple used): Cable 3 sash p2psu (21)
- Triangles surrounding the on point square (4 repeats of this pattern in each): Loops tri e p2p
- On point square: Feather 1 sq 16sd xh
- Two rows of the same pattern (x2 version used): Feather 1 vine triple (6)
- Quartered Square (4 repeats of this pattern): Feather 1 tri b
- two rows of cables (the x4 version was used here): Cable 3 Bars (21)
- Flying Geese band - the Geese: Loops FG tri !bldr (2)
- Flying Geese Band - side setting triangles: Snakes hst p2p (2)
- Rectangle (a square pattern made to fit) : Feather med sq
